On Sal, Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) you can buy a used or new car on the island, or import one. Most new residents first rent a car, then buy locally once they know what they need: a small car for Santa Maria and Espargos, or a pickup or 4x4 for sandy tracks.

Buying on the island or importing?

• Used car on Sal: the quickest option. Check the papers, the condition and rust carefully: salt air is hard on cars.
• New car: through a dealer in Cabo Verde, with warranty and service.
• Import: possible, but duties and rules on the age and condition of the vehicle apply. Check them before you ship a car.

Registration and insurance

To register a car in your name you need your NIF number and identification. Insurance is mandatory. With a foreign driving licence you can usually drive for a limited period; check the current rules if you stay longer.

Driving on Sal

• Traffic drives on the right. The main road links Santa Maria, Espargos and Palmeira.
• Off the main roads you drive on cobblestones and sand tracks; a higher car is useful.
• Watch out for pedestrians, animals and sand on the road, especially at night.
