The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your tax number in Cape Verde (Cabo Verde). On Sal you need it for almost everything: buying a house or car, opening a bank account, signing a rental or work contract and connecting electricity and water. It is usually the first thing you arrange when you move to the island.

• Buying a house or plot and registering it in your name.
• Opening a bank account in Cabo Verde.
• Rental and work contracts, and starting a business.
• Utilities (electricity, water, internet) and registering a car.

How to apply for a NIF on Sal

You apply at the tax office or a citizen service desk. You normally need a valid passport and an address; sometimes extra documents are requested. In many cases a representative with a power of attorney can apply for you, so you do not have to be on the island yourself. The requirements can change: always check the current conditions with the tax authority.

• Apply early: you need the NIF before you sign a purchase or rental contract.
