Sal, Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) is one of the best kitesurfing islands in the world: steady trade winds, warm water and spots for every level, from flat water in Santa Maria bay to the waves of Ponta Preta. The best wind blows roughly from November to June; in summer the wind is lighter.
The kite spots on Sal
Kite Beach (east coast): the most popular spot, with side onshore wind, room on the beach and several kite schools and rental centres. Waves and chop further out.
Ponta Preta (south west): a world famous wave spot for experienced riders. Powerful waves and rocks: not for beginners.
Santa Maria bay: calmer water in front of the town, used by schools for first lessons and by windsurfers.
Kite lessons and rental
Kite schools on Sal teach in several languages, from a first introduction to independent riding. Experienced kiters rent material on the spot or bring their own. Always check the forecast and local rules, and ask the school about the conditions of the day.
Tips for kitesurfing on Sal
A shorty or thin wetsuit is enough most of the year; in winter a 3/2 mm suit is comfortable.
The wind is strong: bring or rent a smaller kite than at home.
Protect yourself from the sun and drink plenty of water.
