A hybrid inverter combines solar panels, a battery and the public grid in one system, and keeps your house on Sal (Cape Verde, Cabo Verde) running when the grid fails. It is the best of both worlds for a house in Santa Maria, Espargos or Palmeira that has a connection, but does not want to sit in the dark during an outage.
How a hybrid system works
During the day the panels power the house and charge the battery. Any surplus can be used later.
In the evening the battery takes over, so you buy less power from the grid.
When the battery is low the grid supplies the house as usual.
During a power cut the inverter disconnects from the grid and supplies the house from the battery and the panels. With a UPS function this happens so fast that computers and the internet keep running.
Hybrid or fully off-grid?
A hybrid system uses the grid as a backup, so the battery can be smaller and you do not need a generator. A fully off-grid system works without any connection, but needs a larger battery and panel array. If your plot has a connection, hybrid is usually the smarter and cheaper start; many hybrid inverters can later run fully off-grid if you want.
Which circuits keep running?
You choose which groups are on the backup output: usually lights, the fridge and freezer, internet, the water pump and a few sockets. Heavy loads such as several air conditioners can be added if the battery and the inverter are large enough. A part of the battery can be kept in reserve for outages, so there is always power when the grid fails in the evening.
A generator as a third source
Many hybrid inverters have a generator input. During a long outage the generator recharges the battery automatically, so you are never without power.
Installed for the climate on Sal
The inverter and battery belong in a shaded, ventilated technical room, away from salt air and sand. On the roof we use wind resistant, corrosion resistant mounting for the solar panels. Want storage mainly for your own solar power? Read about the home battery.
