An off-grid solar system with a battery makes your house on Sal (Cape Verde, Cabo Verde) independent of the public grid. Solar panels charge a battery bank during the day, and an inverter turns that stored energy into normal household power, day and night. On an island with sun almost all year this is a realistic choice, for a villa outside Santa Maria, a plot near Murdeira or a house that simply needs to keep running when the grid fails.
How an off-grid system works
A complete off-grid installation has four parts that are designed together:
Solar panels: they produce all the energy the house uses, so the array is larger than with a normal grid connected system.
Charge controller (MPPT): it charges the battery as efficiently as possible and protects it against overcharging.
Battery bank: usually lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), which is safe, deep cycling and long lasting. It covers the evening, the night and cloudy or hazy days.
Off-grid or hybrid inverter: it supplies 230 volt power for your lights, fridge, air conditioning, pumps and internet, and often has the charge controller built in.
Many installations add a generator input as a safety net, so a small generator can recharge the battery after a long period of little sun.
Why off-grid works so well on Sal
Sun almost every day: Sal is flat and dry, with very little rain and hardly any shade, so the panels produce steadily all year.
Plots without a connection: outside Santa Maria, Espargos and Palmeira not every plot has a grid connection close by. Off-grid lets you build there.
No more power cuts: your house does not notice when the grid goes down.
Predictable costs: after the investment the sun is free and you are not exposed to future electricity prices.
What the island asks of the installation
Sal is sunny, but the climate is demanding for technology. The trade wind blows hard for much of the year, so frames and anchoring must be calculated for wind load. Salt air and fine sand call for corrosion resistant aluminium or stainless steel mounting, sealed connectors and enclosures with a high protection rating. Batteries and inverters last longest in a shaded, ventilated technical room, out of the direct sun. In the winter months Saharan dust (bruma seca) can dim the sun for a few days; we take that into account in the size of the battery and the panel array.
Off-grid, hybrid or a home battery?
Do you have a reliable grid connection and mainly want power during outages? Then a hybrid inverter with backup power or a home battery next to your solar panels is often enough. Is there no connection, or do you want to be fully independent? Then a complete off-grid system is the right choice. We help you decide on the basis of your plot and your consumption.
