On Sal (Cape Verde, Cabo Verde) you learn kitesurfing, wing foiling or surfing in warm turquoise water with steady wind. Schools at Kite Beach and in Santa Maria teach beginners and improvers, children and teenagers too.
Sun, sea and beach under the palms
Sal is the island for a true sun, sea and beach holiday. You get more than 350 days of sunshine a year, miles of white sandy beaches lined with beach bars, and at Santa Maria you simply walk into the calm, clear sea for a swim. Lying under the palms, a drink on the beach and watching the sun set over the sea: that is a holiday on Sal.
The sea water is around 25 °C on average, and from August to October it is often 28 °C and up to 29 °C. Because it hardly ever rains, the heat is dry: the cooling trade wind keeps it pleasant, never too hot and never cold, and in the evening it cools down a few degrees.
Kitesurfing lessons
A beginner course starts on the beach with kite control and safety, then you go into the water, often with a radio helmet so the instructor can guide you. After a number of lessons you ride on your own. Improvers learn jumps, freestyle or wave riding. More about the spots on kitesurfing on Sal.
Wing foil lessons
You start with the wing on the beach and on a big board, then move step by step to the foil. In the steady wind of Sal you learn fast. See wing foiling on Sal.
Surf lessons
Surf schools choose a spot every day that suits your level and the waves. Experienced surfers head to Ponta Preta in winter.
When?
You can take lessons all year; the wind season from November to May is best for kite and wing. See the weather on Sal.
