Cost of an off-grid solar system on Sal, Cape Verde

English | Deutsch | Nederlands | Français | Español | Italiano | Português

The price of an off-grid solar system with battery on Sal (Cape Verde, Cabo Verde) depends mostly on how much energy you use at night. Two houses of the same size in Santa Maria can need very different systems. That is why we do not publish standard prices, but explain here what determines the cost, so you can judge any quote.

Lithium battery bank and off-grid inverter in a house on Sal, Cape Verde

What makes up the price

  • Battery bank: usually the largest item. Its size follows from your evening and night consumption and the number of days the house must run without sun.
  • Solar panels and mounting: on Sal the frames must resist the trade wind and salt air, which asks for heavier, corrosion resistant mounting.
  • Inverter and charge controller: the power must match your peak load, for example air conditioning and a pump starting at the same time.
  • Cabling, protection and technical room: breakers, surge protection, earthing and a shaded, ventilated place for the battery.
  • Transport and import: most components come from abroad. Shipping to Sal and import formalities are part of the price.
  • Installation and maintenance: work on site, commissioning, and periodic cleaning and checks.
  • Optional generator: a small backup for long hazy periods, with its own fuel and maintenance.

How to compare it with grid power

An off-grid system is an investment paid up front, after which the energy is almost free. The fair comparison is the cost per kilowatt hour over the life of the system: divide the total investment plus maintenance and a battery replacement by all the kilowatt hours it will deliver. Compare that with what you would pay for grid power on Sal, or for a diesel generator, over the same period. For plots without a connection, also count what bringing the grid to the plot would cost and how long it would take.

Five ways to keep the cost down

  • Save first: shade, ventilation and efficient appliances shrink the whole system.
  • Use the sun directly: run the pool pump, washing machine and water pump during the day.
  • Choose hybrid where possible: with a reliable connection a hybrid system with backup needs a smaller battery.
  • Build in steps: a modular lithium battery can be extended later.
  • Buy quality once: cheap components fail sooner in heat and salt air.
